Who is vice admiral garp
Edward Newgate, famously known as Whitebeard, was the strongest man in the world of One Piece. Like many others on this list, Newgate was once a member of the Rocks Pirates as well and in doing so, engaged Garp in combat 38 years ago in the God Valley. Newgate later started his own crew and became the strongest of all. Although a direct reference to a clash between him and Garp has never been given, it goes without saying that the two did, at some point, fight.
The King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger was the only person to have conquered the seas of One Piece. He was a man worthy of rivaling Whitebeard in a battle that lasted for 4 years. Roger also had quite an interesting history with Garp. The two are said to have fought against each other countless times and in doing so, nearly killing the other. For Garp, Roger was likely his biggest enemy but also someone he could never bring himself to hate.
At the end of the day, they had great respect for each other. Rei Penber is an avid fan of anime and manga. Don Chinjao had a bounty of over million and he was famed for his drill-esque head. However, it was a matter of extreme indifference to Garp, who simply flattened his head with just one strike. Garp is a unique Marine in several ways. One thing that immediately strikes your mind is his relationship with Gol D. Gol D. Roger was the first man to conquer the entire Grand Line.
Roger and his crew became the most wanted group of pirates in the world. According to the Marines, Garp is said to be the only Marine who could rival Roger's strength.
Whether this is true or not remains to be seen as Oda hasn't revealed any instance where it is shown that Roger and Garp were equals. It is only said that Garp managed to corner Roger several times, however, it should be noted that Roger was never caught. He just turned himself in. Many One Piece fans were left confused to as why Garp is still a vice-admiral when he is known as "Hero of the Marines.
Garp wanted to remain a vice-admiral because he didn't want to be under the direct control of the World Nobles of Mary Geoise. Garp has no intention of obeying the commands of the World Nobles. So, he rejected promotions to remain a vice-admiral. Garp also stated that he had enough authority as a vice-admiral to do whatever he wanted. Shiki used to be a member of Rocks Pirate and when the crew was defeated at God Valley like all the other members, he left and started anew. Ace asks Garp to kill him to stop Whitebeard from coming for him. However, Garp tells him that even if he did that, it would not stop Whitebeard, Garp says at the end that no matter what happened, they had enraged the master of the seas referring to Whitebeard , the latter, Garp mentions it with a little of happiness.
He would then return to the navy barracks, where he would be severely reprimanded by an angry Sengoku. Once in Marineford, Garp prepares for war against Whitebeard. Before Ace's execution begins, Sengoku reveals to him that he already knows the truth that Garp has been hiding; and that at that moment he was going to reveal it.
Angry but indifferent, Garp tells Sengoku that he is free to do as he pleases. Garp sits next to Tsuru, and between the two of them they hear Sengoku's confession that Ace is Gold Roger's son. Faced with this statement, Garp is reminded of Roger and his request to save his son. Once Whitebeard arrives, Garp does not participate in the battle. Instead he approaches the gallows and begins to dialogue with Sengoku about the advancement of the execution of his adopted grandson.
Sengoku warns him not to do anything stupid, to which Garp tells him that any pirate disgusts him, and that if Ace were any other pirate, that he would even kill him.
But Garp reveals that watching a member of his family die is different. Garp remembers how Ace defended Luffy every time his grandfather gave him a punishment. The vice admiral begins to cry bitterly and yells at his adopted grandson why he never lived as he told him. Ace looks surprised at Garp's reaction. Sengoku sees this scene and warns Garp not to try anything to which he replies that if he wanted to do something, he would have done it long ago. Later, and at a crucial moment in the battle, Luffy appears with other inmates of Impel Down.
Garp sees it and is annoyed that Luffy got there. Seeing him, Sengoku angrily reprimands Garp, to later order his tactic for this war: The circulating wall, a series of high and thick steel walls that would enclose the Whitebeard pirates making them easy targets, but leaving a small gap caused by Orz Jr.
When Marco tries to save Ace Garp intercepts him with a punch indicating that Garp is much stronger than Marco. Later, Luffy manages to avoid Ace's execution, thanks to the Haki Haushoku. Thanks to Inazuma's help, Luffy manages to get very close to the execution scaffold, but then Garp intercepts Luffy.
Luffy asks him to step aside, but Garp tells him that he is willing to confront him. Both prepare to fight, Luffy activates gear Second, and Garp tries to attack Luffy with his most powerful fist.
Right at that moment, Garp remembers Ace's words "I wish to live" , and instinctively on purpose, Garp misses his punch, and Luffy delivers a blow that sends him far away. Sengoku recriminates this action since he realized that Garp had lost the fight. Luffy finally manages to rescue Ace from the scaffold with the help of Mr 3, Garp and Sengoku rise after Ace is freed and prepare to face Whitebeard.
When the army of pirates prepared to flee the island on Whitebeard's orders, Admiral Aikanu intervenes and begins to rant about Whitebeard, treating him as a pathetic loser of an era now over, generally to provoke them.
Ace falls into his trap and he takes the opportunity to assassinate Luffy, but Ace intervenes by protecting Luffy with his body dying in the process. This causes such a state of anger and fury in Garp that Sengoku himself has to suggest it because if he did not do so, Garp assured that he would kill Admiral Aikanu.
After the death of Whitebeard, Garp can be seen with a dark expression, when Coby asks for it war stops is surprised,. With the end of the war, Garp arrives at Fuchsia Village on Dawn Island, as it is necessary to protect the island from increasing pirate violence.
Although taking a beating from Dadan for letting Ace get killed, Garp is protected from the massacre by Makino, who understands that he is the most affected by the losses that occurred at the Marineford. It was later revealed that both he and Sengoku resigned from the Navy, however their records and titles remain intact for the sake of raising the young sailors. Although he was not named, Garp appears in the short story Romance Dawn V. For a long time before his appearance in One Piece, it was thought that the unnamed grandfather was simply a little relevant character in the end One Piece was serialized and thus had a greater impact.

He is a great teacher as he was able to make Coby and Helmeppo capable fighters in a short period of time and he was also selected to be an instructor. He was also the one who trained Luffy and Ace into being strong enough to set sail on their own. Aside from his incredible mastery over Busoshoku Haki, Garp is also very knowledgeable of the other two types.
Although not demonstrated to be a user of the other two types, Garp commented that Luffy has "inherited" Haoshoku Haki when it was subconsciously released. When Coby seems to have awakened Kenbunshoku Haki on his own, Dr. Fishbonen recommended that Coby ask Garp how to master it, suggesting he has enough expertise in it to mentor others.
As a vice admiral, Garp is fully capable of using Haki. He demonstrates proficient usage of Busoshoku Haki, being able to injure Luffy several times, bypassing his rubber body. He was also seen crushing Chinjao's uniquely shaped head with a Haki imbued punch 30 years ago, by hardening his fist and turning it obsidian black to increase the damage inflicted.
During the Battle of Marineford, he managed to punch and hurt Marco despite his regenerative phoenix form. So far, Garp has been seen throwing cannonballs including a giant one, mounted on a chain with his bare hands.
The cannonballs he threw soared at a faster velocity than when fired out of a cannon, due to Garp's monstrous strength. Straw Hat Pirates Monkey D.
