Why do my eyelashes grow downwards
The sheath of cells surrounding the hair, called the hair follicle, may become infected. This can all be especially painful when an eyelash is involved. Trichiasis is slightly different. The eyelash grows outside the skin, but in the wrong direction. Eyelashes on the upper eyelid usually grow upward toward the forehead, allowing them to catch debris and protect the eye. Trichiasis causes these eyelashes to curl down and inward, toward the eye.
On the lower eyelid, where eyelashes typically grow downward, trichiasis causes them to grow upward toward the eye. Trichiasis can even cause the lashes to touch the eye, causing irritation. A person may feel like there is something in the eye. An eyelash trapped under the skin can easily be mistaken for an infected gland in the eyelid, called a stye. A stye looks like a pimple or red lump. It usually drains on its own after several days. If the pain is intense or the stye does not go away, antibiotics can treat the infection.
However, a person can easily distinguish a stye from trichiasis, which is characterized by a reversal of eyelash direction. Trichiasis can occur in a few eyelashes, but it can gradually affect many or all of the eyelashes. Most people with trichiasis notice a specific area in which many or all of the lashes are growing in the wrong direction. If left untreated, trichiasis can injure the eye, for example by scratching the cornea and exposing the area to infection. When another eye condition is causing trichiasis, there may be additional symptoms.
A condition that often occurs with trichiasis is called blepharitis. This involves inflammation of the eyelid margin, and a person with blepharitis may notice that the skin on their eyelid peels, turns red, collects mucus or is unusually sensitive.
In rare cases , chronic illnesses that affect the eyelids or mucous membranes, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, cause trichiasis.
When just a few eyelashes are misshapen or ingrown, a doctor will usually remove them. They may regrow in the right direction. It is also important to treat the underlying cause. When many eyelashes are ingrown, or when eyelashes regrow in the wrong direction, the following treatments can help:.
I have pretty long eyelashes, but they grow down too. I've pretty much given up. Mine naturally curl upwards but maybe try getting an eyelash curler and heating it up gently with a blow dryer. It might work. I have lashes that curl upward so I dont really know.
Have you tries eyelash extensions? You shouldn't curl it on one place only, but from the roots all the way to the tips. Idk how to explain this lol. But there won't be an awkward angle this way. I curl my eyelashes in three different places end, middle, and tip , so it gives it a natural curl.

I've learned by using a spoolie daily helps. Also, I use the spoolie before applying my mascara primer, then I curl, and then apply mascara. Joined Dec 8, Messages 11 Reaction score 0. Also, heat the lashcurler up with your blowdryer, so it's just warm enough to safely touch your skin and curl a couple of times, moving up the lash.

I have the same problem Have you had any replies to your post??? I thought at first it was because i sleep on my face and that side of my face is down on the pillow. I do not wear mascara anymore cause it looks as if I forgot to put mascara on one eye.
Does anyone have a clue as to what causes this????? Joined Jun 1, Messages 20, Reaction score Genetics most likely My grandmother actually had eye lashes that would grow backwards towards her eyes and had to be cut out I'd try using an eyelash conditioner and then use maybe a heated eyelash curler every day and train them to stay curled even if you don't use mascara..
Joined Nov 12, Messages 2, Reaction score I've had the same problem, and I've had surgeries on both my upper and lower lids to correct it partially. My lashes were actually growing at an angle so far down that my eyeballs were getting scratches from them whenever I blinked. My lashes still kind of grow downish, but now it's down and out at an angle, instead of down and in. I'll tell you one thing Even if I spend 10 minutes curling my lashes, if I use a regular mascara, my lashes will unbend and be straight down and out again.
